December 10 – The Chilean Fjords

December 10 – The Chilean Fjords

Some would imagine that the southern tip of the South American continent would be a point of land – in reality the lower portion of South America is a maize of fjords and islands, as the tops of the Andes recede into the sea.

This map is the lower few hundred miles of the west coast of South America.

The ship will be spending the next few days winding through the fjords toward Cape Horn, spending time in Punta Arenas, Chile and Ushuaia, Argentina – truly two cities at the end of the world.

Along the way we viewed awesome cliffs and peaks coming right down to the edge of the water.

There are dozens of waterfalls dropping seemingly straight down into the fjord.

This topography represents a radical departure from the tropical, flat country of northern Chile.
